American Charli D'Amelio, who held the top rank until on Thursday, June 23, was surpassed by 22-year-old Khabane Lame, who post under the handle @khaby.lame.

The 18-year-old dancer has 142.2 million followers, whilst Italian-born Khaby increased his following over night to 142.5 million after months of intense competition.


During the pandemic in March 2020, Khaby joined the platform, and his following swiftly rose as a result of his amusing films.


With her popular dancing moves, Charli quickly rose to the top of the site after joining in 2019, and by 2020, she had gained over 100 million fans.

She declared on stage at the moment that the accomplishment was "like a dream."

'While we're extremely proud of Charli and all that she has accomplished since she shared her first TikTok video in May 2019.'


Meanwhile, TikTok disclosed that it would give $100,000 to American Dance Movement, a group working to improve access to dance education in the US, in Charli's honor.


Khabane lost his work in March 2020, during the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, and returned to live with his parents. He took advantage of the lockout to create a TikTok account, swiftly rose to the top of the platform, and profited from the situation.
